Duane's Top 10 Favorite Movies

One of my favorite questions is, "What's your favorite movie?" and it's always been a tough question for me because I like so many; which is the reason I like the question because it makes me think about it. I think it is a good question too because I believe you can tell a lot about someone from their movie collection. Until now it had not occurred to me to peruse through our movie collection and really think about which are my top ten. But tonight I did. Now, before I get to the list let me remind you that these are not my list of the top ten BEST movies (meaning best overall quality, best made, or most important- i.e. ones that I think everyone needs to see) rather these are the top ten movies that I could watch at any time, in any place, and have a great time doing so. In other words... my top ten favorite movies.

* Note: Although it is certainly worthy to be in this list, and has been a staple in this list for many years, The Princess Bride will not be in it because I have seen it just that many number of times. Sorry Chuck.

10. Sleepless in Seattle- yes I have a romantic side and I think it is simply an enjoyable movie to watch that never seems to get old.

9. Casablanca- certainly one of the "best" movies ever, but it also holds a solid place in my list of favorites.

8. Braveheart- it has to be on this list because it's freakin' Braveheart. The reason it's not ranked higher is that I feel it is a bit too long and can drag.

7. Pirates of the Caribbean- to quote Chris Emmick, "Johnny Depp knocks it out of the park." His performance alone makes it a great movie to watch.

6. Shrek- easily the best cartoon movie I've ever seen and one that still makes me laugh no matter how many times I watch it.

5. The Lord of the Rings (All 3)- when I get the chance to watch all three back to back I consider it a day well spent.

4. Spiderman 2- my favorite childhood superhero in a great movie with just enough Sam Rami campiness.

3. The Matrix- it's just that awesome!!!!!

2. Tombstone- it is a limitless source of great quotes, I can see a lot of my friends in the characters, and it is simply a flat out great movie.

1. The Shawshank Redemption- I'm tired of people saying this is a great movie but never truly giving it it's due. It is the one movie that will consistently move me to tears at the end. And if I were ever to take a movie quote as my life philosophy (which I won't do when there are Bible verses like Psalm 27:4 which sum up my life a whole lot better) it would be "Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things; and no good thing ever dies."

So, there they are. I hope you've enjoyed the list and feel free to argue for or against any of them or suggest others that should be on it.

I don't consider any of them to be better than the ones in my top ten. Star Trek 2 and 6 would be in the top 20 however.
