Freedom to Choose Act

Friends-

I realize this is a touchy subject. Bare with me and at least read the cry of my heart on this issue.
Basic freedoms have been set up by the founding fathers of our country and allow us the right to happiness whatever that looks like to us as an individual. Be that 12 children or child free, we are all entitled to basic human rights. I admitt to being a Christian and with that I carry a Jesus world view. I do confess to somewhat arrogently believing Jesus is the best way for all decisions that need to be made. This is merely a result of my experience with him over the last 20 some years. Just like those of your out there who swear by a certian brand of automobile because yours has always been fabulous, I believe Jesus is truly fabulous. He's always been there for me, loving me and guiding me. So even though I might seem pompous to some of you in my Jesus view, I do also admit it's not my place to tell you what is best. I have a Holy Spirit who does that for me. No person has the right to tell someone what do to or how to do it (within reason.) So, with that line of thinking, women do have a right to choose.

HOWEVER!!! I have worked in the trenches with women facing the difficult decision surrounding an unplanned pregnancy. I have counseled, prayed with, cried with and loved on women who were faced with the hardship of caring for a child they were not planning to create reguardless of the circumstances surrounding the conception. Planned Parenthood wants us to believe this "Freedom of Choice Act" is the answer to the problems encountered by women nationwide. They believe women are "in bondage to their ability to concieve children." Because it is their body, they should be allowed the right to choose how to handle that situation. Be it a termination of the pregancy at any stage, the delivery of the child into their own family of origin, or a loving adoption plan made, the woman should have the right to choose. Let's look at that line of thinking, shall we?

Whatever your stance is on abortion, I want you to think long and hard about the ramifications a ban of this caliber will have on humanity as a whole. This is not a politcal issue in my eyes. Democrat or Republican. American, Canadian or Irish. We are all human beings. The breathe of life is what we all share regardless of our political stance, world view, religious denomition, skin color, accent or gender. That being said, let's think about the slippery slope this ban can take us on as humanity.

So this year Obama allows women the ultimate right to choose. He signs the FOCA bill and hereby gives women the ultimate right to choose their path of happines. Great. So, this year alone over 300,000 pregnancies will be terminated in the USA. This is with the current ban in place for all abortions to occur before the 24th week of pregnancy. So we lift that ban and later this year women in week 26 can now "terminate" their pregancy. Okay, great. She has the right to the pursue her happiness. This child will greatly inconvenience her life for whatever reason she so deems, therefore making her less happy. So... let's just terminate the "problem". My question is where does this end?

A woman who is 32 weeks pregnant goes into early labor. The doctor tells her if the child is born now, it will most likely have severe lung problems all it's life. A safe and legal way to take care of this problem is to just go ahead and terminate the pregnacy through a partial birth abortion procedure (which if you haven't researched how this works, I encourage to do so now. See just how barbaric it is.) Of course we must do emergency surgery NOW, because as soon as the baby passes through the vagina it will be considered man slaughter to the nth degree.

So, after 10 years of women having the right to choose, it is now the year 2019. We have become numb to the termination of human life as long as we can't see it and it's wrapped up inside a womb somewhere. Now where does it end? How much right does a mother have over her child? Can we start killing innocent children simply becuase there is a mental handicapp or severe health issue that is causing the mother to be less happy in her pursuit of happiness?? Sounds like something I remember learning in my history class somewhere. An Adolf Hitler, genocide of millions of Jews, the "termination" of millions of others who were disabled and were causing humanity to be lowered, etc. Sounds familiar?? And it keeps going....

I realize the ridiculousness of these examples. However, I'm merely posing questions for you to consider. Where exactly does humanity begin? What deems a person as sentient? What factors must be present before something is considered alive? Just what exactly is required before a live should be protected simply in the name of humanity??

Sure, off hand giving women ultimate freedom sounds great. But what about the lives of the children? You cannot tell me a 24 week old fetus is not alive. I've had one inside me kicking, punching, and hick-upping. My son was just as human inside me at 24 weeks, 12 weeks or 12 hours as he is now at 12 months!! Let's fight for humanity and say NO to FOCA!!! Like I said earlier, humanity is all everyone on earth has in common. I think there's something to say about that regardless of who earned our vote in 2008.

Dacian wrote the blog entry and here's my two cents... First, read the FOCA yourself- http://www.nrlc.org/FOCA/FOCA2007S1173.pdf
In that article you will find several interesting things. One of the main points that is made is that this Act should be passed because "Congress has the affirmative power... to facilitate interstate commerce" and to make sure no state interferes with that commerce. The point being that those medical clinics that perform abortions employ doctors, nurses, and others that live out of state; the buy medicine that come from out of state; and patrons also come from out of state.
So, here's my question... under the same reasoning should Congress therefore create an act that would lift all bans on fireworks? Living in Kentucky I am not alloed to buy certain fireworks. Those who live in Tennessee do not have such restrictions. If I do buy a certain degree of firework in KY I am bound by law to sign a paper saying I will not light them in KY. Isn't this law infringing on my right to blow something up???
I could, of course, bring up other state-by-state laws such as gun control and seat belts but you get the idea. If congress passes the FOCA it is being inconsistent.
One other vauge point the act brings up is that it would allow a woman's right to abort a child after viability "when it is necessary to protect the life or health of the woman." The Act defines viability as the "ability to survive outside the womb". It however, provided no definition for the word "health." Does that mean becuase she has a headache she can kill the child? Dacian asks a great question... where does it end? The FOCA is not nearly specific enough to answer that question.
